In 2025, we’re in the process of updating our beginner modules to reflect the latest research and revised ACTFL standards. They will now follow a clear, learner-focused progression designed to help the coaches adapt to each learner’s skill level. As you can see below, our A1 modules will be structured by different blocks of questions, from Level 1 to Level 4:
Label | Description | Example | Module level |
Level 1 |
Easy Yes/No question The question is short with simple vocabulary related to the topic of the module. It can be answered by “yes” or “no”. |
¿Te gusta tu ciudad? |
From A1 |
Level 2 |
One-word answer questions Easy and short question. The answer uses known vocabulary such as the name of a person, the name of a city, the age, a number, the name of a famous person or movie name or whatever doesn’t have to be translated to the target language. |
¿Cómo se llama tu ciudad? |
From A1 |
Level 3 |
Embedded choice A simple question that provides two or more options. These encourage the learner to hear a larger variety of vocabulary and to make decisions. |
¿Tu ciudad es grande o pequeña? |
From A1 |
Level 4 |
Directed Information questions A more structured question that can be answered with a single word or short phrase with a large variety of possible answers and vocabulary such as an activity, a type of food, pieces of clothes… |
¿Cuál es tu lugar favorito en tu ciudad? |
From A1 |
Level 5 |
Open ended questions Still a simple question that encourages a longer and detailed answer. The learner can also have the possibility to answer only with one word. |
¿Cómo es tu ciudad? |
From A2 |
Level 6 |
Polite request This option won’t appear in beginner modules but it is good to know that it is here. It will usually start with “Why do you think that…”, “What do you think of…”, “Tell me more about…”. It requires the learner to have a real reflection and to justify the answer. We will see this level of question in Intermediate and Advanced modules. |
¿Qué piensas de tu ciudad? Háblame de tu ciudad. |
From Intermediate |

NB: these changes will be progressively available for A1 modules in Spanish, French, English and Portuguese.
